Rigoberta H. Martinez, 81, of Slaton, Texas passed to her heavenly home on Saturday, July 9, 2022, surrounded by her family after a short illness. She was born January 4, 1941, in Buda, Texas to late Theodulo and Josephina (Ybarbo) Hernandez. Rigo married Joe A. Martinez in Portales, New Mexico. They were married 45 years before Joe’s death in 1998. Rigo’s pride and joy were her ten children and the grandchildren that followed. She was a wonderful homemaker and enjoyed entertaining. She worked outside the home while raising her children, working at Perkins County Hospital (Grant, NE) for 14 years and then retiring from Covenant Health Systems after 30 years as a surgical technician. Rigo was the loving and respected matriarch of her family and friend to all. Her faith in her Savior Jesus Christ carried her through the difficult losses of her husband, daughters, and grandson. She was unwavering in her service to Christ showing kindness to everyone she met and sharing her faith at all times.
She is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brothers, Edward, Raymond and Adolfo Hernandez; her sister, Patricia Hernandez; her daughters, Suzanna Martinez and Adele (Sharon) Mojica; and grandson, Justin David Martinez.
Rigo is survived by her sons, David (Cecilia) Martinez of Lubbock; Henry Lewis Martinez of Slaton and Rick Martinez of Lubbock; her daughters, Margie Martinez of Austin, Eva M. Smith of Port Charlotte, FL, Mary Martinez of Lubbock, Christine Pfiffner of Arlington, and Loretta Martinez of Florence, SC; her brothers, Charlie Hernandez, Ted Hernandez and Herman Hernandez of Lubbock; her sisters, Niki Dominguez of Slaton, Olga Rodriguez, Yolanda Cisneros and Norma Vidaurre all of Lubbock; 12 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, in The Chapel of Broadway Funeral Directors with recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church (1120 52nd Street, Lubbock, 79412). Interment to follow at Englewood Cemetery in Slaton under the direction of Broadway Funeral Directors.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Heart Association; Lupus Foundation of America or American Cancer Society.
