Sara R Gomez

October 11, 1928 — February 22, 2025

Lubbock

Sara R Gomez, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2025, in Lubbock, Texas, at the age of 96. Born on October 11, 1928, in San Jose de Gracia, Jalisco, Mexico to Antonio & Rita Rocha Flores, she embraced life with unwavering joy and kindness that touched everyone who knew her.

In 1970, Sara married the love of her life, Secundino C. Gomez, in Wilson, Texas, beginning a journey filled with love and family. Together, they built a foundation that has flourished through generations, offering warmth, wisdom, and laughter to all around them. Sara was particularly passionate about her family, dedicating countless weekends to working at their fruit stand, Fruteria Vega, at the flea market. Those cherished moments are memories that will forever be held close in the hearts of her loved ones.

An avid gardener and a skilled cook, Sara found great joy in nurturing both her garden and her family. She took pride in sharing her culinary creations, often bringing everyone together around the dinner table to celebrate life’s simple pleasures. Her devout faith was a guiding force in her life. Sara was actively involved in her church community at Blessed Sacrament in Wilson, Texas, where she found strength and connection through her spirituality. Mami Sara, a name given to her by her grandchildren, was also a name adopted by all those who came to know and love her. With only good things to say about her due to her loving spirit and compassionate way, Mami Sara never met a stranger and was always eager and willing to help those in need.

Sara's legacy lives on through her daughters and sons-in-law, Elva & Lorenzo Vega of Mexico, Delia & Fernando Mendoza of Lubbock, Rosalinda Gonzales of Ft. Worth, Lulu Hernandez of Lubbock, and Celia Gomez with her fiancé, Tracy Smith of Lubbock. She is also survived by her brother, Aureliano Rocha Flores of California, three sisters, Clotilde Rocha Flores, Amparo Alvarez Rocha of Mexico, and Lupe Rocha Flores of California. Her family tree flourishes with seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren, each carrying a piece of her spirit.

Sara joins in eternal rest her beloved husband, Secundino "Papa Tino" whom her family knows will give him a special hug on their behalf, along with her sisters, Maria de Jesus Rocha, Evangelina Rocha, Adela Rocha, and her cherished grandson, Fernando Mendoza Jr., as well as her great-grandson, Jeremy Acevedo Jr. Though she will be deeply missed, the love she cultivated and the memories she created will continue to echo through her family for generations to come.

Visitation will be held on February 27, 2025, from 3:30 PM until 7:00 PM at Broadway Funeral Directors, followed by a Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM. A Mass honoring her life will take place on February 28, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, where friends and family can gather to celebrate the remarkable life of Mami Sara.
